My central air conditioner died at the start of triple digit temperatures. Should I repair or replace?

My central air conditioner is 20 years old, although I replaced a 0 part about 3 years ago. Is it time to replace the entire unit and if so, what brands are best in terms of reliability and "energy star" efficiency? Should I use single room units instead? I would be happy without having the whole house cool, if that would be more energy efficient. I live in Pasadena, southern California, if that makes a difference.

Does central air conditioner work less efficiently when it's hot outside?

I have a new central air conditioner. Normally, it cools down the house 5 min per degree, so it takes around 25 min to lower the temperature from 80 to 75 degrees upstairs. I have 2 floors. Today, I went out to run errands and didn’t get back until 1pm, when it became 91 degrees outside and 85 degrees inside. I kept the AC on for several hours, and it didn’t cool the house below 78 degrees until 9pm.

Does the AC work less effectively when it’s really hot outside, and the coils don’t cool off very fast in 90 degree heat? Is that why it didn’t go below 78 degrees inside till night time?

Is there such as thing as a super-hot day when even a 3.5 ton AC gets overwhelmed? Is there any point to "staying ahead" by turning the AC on at 11am if we think a hot one is coming in order to start cooling earlier before the house gets really hot?

what happens when an air conditioner condensate line clogs? what kinda professional do i call if it is?

i have a wet carpet that has been eating through towels for a couple of months now in a certain area of my house, and only in a certain area in my house. i have a central air conditioner and only a one story house.
this has been going on for a few months now and i know mold is there.

i’ve tried my hand at drying the carpet and to my dismay, it soaks up again the next day.

with extensive amounts of Google searches, after suspecting that the mold is catching up to my cough that could progressively amplify, i suspect that it may be a Air Conditioner Condensation Line drip.

i watched that video of the professional guy and it might be it.

and,

what kind of professional do I call about fixing a condensation line. A plumber?

and

who would I call about getting rid of the mold?
The wet carpet leak is adjacent with the bathroom (door), so I’m assuming it would be rather moist I’m 100% positive that the wet carpet isn’t the restroom (putting that out there so as it isn’t brought up as a possible cause).

But I do need to know, if anybody might know if it is coming from the FLOOR or the CEILING ?, because if it would be a condensation clog, wouldn’t it come from the ceiling?

How do I get my central air conditioner compressor to kick on?

I noticed that my central air conditioner in my house was blowing air but not blowing cold air. I went outside and noticed that my outdoor air conditioner condenser fan was running fine but the compressor wasn’t making any noise. Any suggestions?
I looked at the fuse box and there are two fuses…is one for the compressor and one for the fan on the condenser…cause like I said, the fan on the condenser does turn on.
