What R value insulation for ohio (walls, attic)?

by jstroud on April 18, 2010

I am currently remodeling my house and am needing to re-insulate. What kind of insulation should I use in the walls and attic? I want to use fiberglass rolls but not sure what r value will work best.

It depends on the width of yor stud wall. If your wall has 2×4 framing, you can only use R-13 or R-15, maximum. If the studs are 2×6, you can use R-19, which will be very good. Make sure that you use insulation that comes with vapor retarder, foil-faced or with Kraft-faced. Foil or Kraft paper should be on the warm (Interior) side. For attic, you need to go with minimum R-38 insulation (minimum). That can be batt insulation or blown insulation (which I don’t like). Foam insulation is also used but it’s very expensive. If you want to spend more money or want to make your attic a habitable area (if the space allows you to have a cathedral ceiling), you can put polyisocyanurate insulation boards (build up to 5 inches thick) between rafters.

See also this web site. You can put in your zip code and it telss you what is the best insulation for you:
