Replacing Broken Storm Windows in Your Home

When you surf the net you will find a lot of articles about replacement window ratings but today I want to look at something different.

The first thing to do when you want to replace storm windows is to put together all the necessary tools. Find some pliers, tempered glass that is measured, gloves, glazing compound, a putty knife, brush, safety goggles and a trash container for the glass that can be thrown away.

Take the putty knife or any other flat instrument and remove all the old caulking. Save glazers points if they are there. Take the pliers and remove the glass while wearing the goggles and gloves. Brush chips or slivers away. Then take some measuring tape and measure the space where you intend to put in the glass glass. Measure the bottom side, the top and on both side – left and right.

You should see a place where you can fit the glass. That is the exact part you should be measuring. You need to be careful when taking your measurement as the glass shouldn’t be too tight nor too loose. You can make sure of this by leaning a 1/8 inch space on all sides as you take your measurements. Fit the glass into the frame; this might take a little time doing.

Then you need to replace the glazier’s points, that is, if the window came with some. Take the glazing compound, if it is on the dry side, roll it around in your bare hand to soften it; If you are using a fresh one then there is no need to soften it.

Now take the glazing compound and spread it neatly around the window. Use the putty knife to seal it into the wooden or metal frame. Using the putty knife cover all sides, get enough in the corners. Make sure there isn’t any caulking showing when viewing from the other side. On the following day make sure that you clean any caulking that was spilled and then leave everything for a week – to set on its own.

By the way if you find this to be complext just find a window replacement contractor to help you.

That is everything there is to replacing your broken storm windows. You can help yourself by learning more about this topic by checking out some other online sources. It is also important to research about best wood replacement windows.
