I have been a huge proponent of spending as little as possible for utilities in my house. Our last house which we just moved out of was extremely easy on the budget even during the coldest months and high natural gas prices. Our new house has a big appetite for natural gas and electricity. We have owned it for a month and a half now and our first full gas bill was the same as the largest bill ever at our previous residence. This occuring during one of the warmest Decembers on record in our area. Currently we have a ca. 1972 furnace which pumps about $.40 of every dollar spent for heating up the flue. It keeps the birds warm at the top of our chimney

I am looking at installing a hybrid hvac system into the house. It is very expensive but should keep the bills lower in the comming years. I will be updating this blog as the furnace is installed and starts functioning and let you know what kind of results I am experiencing with the set-up.
