Why does my air conditioner work fine during the day and blow warm air at night?

by jstroud on April 29, 2010

My air conditioner works great during the heat of the day but at night around the time it starts getting darks it starts blowing warm air. Doesn’t that usually work the other way around?
Just turned it off for a half hour and turned it back on and it seems to be blowing colder. I’ll check the coils tomorrow.

does sound backwards but one thing that comes to mind is that the evap coil may be dirty, do you replace your filters often?

The dirt will acts as an insulation on the coil and reduces cooling capacity, which may not be noticeable with a high heat load on it, but when nightfall comes and the heat load decreases the evap coil is unable to pull out the heat from the air.

also could be a condenser fan motor that is freezing up after its been working all day. They’ll often do this when they’re on their last leg…run for some time then quit, and after the unit has been off for a while and restarted will begin to work again.

it all depends on what YOU have the thermostat’s set at.
at night the air is not as hot and so the unit doesn’t need to come on as much. raise the setting to make it come on more often.
good luck to ya
