Selecting From The Many Types And Styles Of Quality Freestanding Pellet Stoves

by Jeff on June 29, 2009

Pellet stoves create warmth using small pellets made from waste paper, wood chips bark, and other miscellaneous organic materials which are compressed into pellets. Small wood chips, nutshells, and corn kernels can also be burned by some types of pellet stove on the market. Pellet stoves provide heat much more efficiently than fireplaces or regular wood burning stoves.

Pellet stoves will also be much better for the environment than other home heating method which utilizes a solid fuel. They work well in apartments, townhomes, and regular single family homes. When buying a pellet stove for your home you will need to choose between a fireplace insert and a free standing stove. Freestanding pellet stoves are good at heating up a room but will need a fan to bring heat into the surrounding rooms.

Pellet fireplace inserts require that you already have a fireplace. Pellet stoves will have a pellet hopper which holds the pellets until they need to be fed to the stove. The speed with which the pellets are put into the stove will determine how much heat is produced. Some of the more advanced pellet stoves will include a thermostatic control of the amount of pellet being fed to the stove.

How your pellet stove needs to be installed is dependant upon which model you buy. Each pellet stove will have its own installation instructions. Freestanding pellet stoves should be in an open area so that the heat can be disbursed throughout the space. Fireplace insert models can be placed in the fireplace you already have or the corner of the room.

All pellet stoves will need some kind of venting to provide air to the stove and to remove the exhaust gases from your home. Be aware of the requirements given by the unit manufacturer and the building codes for your local area when installing a pellet stove. Using the incorrect type of venting may be against the law and cancel the warranty on the product.
